This is a story that I wrote and self-published around 2012. It is based on a joke I heard while working up north in Alberta. The idea is that it gets so cold, so fast in Alberta that ducks get frozen into their duck ponds – LOL.
In 1992 Mona, my wife, and Ryan our 18 month old son moved to Fallbrook, California https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallbrook,_California As Ryan grew up he participated in “Tiger Cubs” ….. then Cub Scouts and then later on in Boy Scouts. Cub Scouts have somehow connected to the “Junglebook” story and through that the Indian connection. The way the story came about was that I was the Akela for my son’s Cub Scout troop https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Jungle_Book_and_Scouting
Although kinda politically incorrect today, our Akela (me) always dressed in Indian regalia. Akela was responsible for handing out awards and badges of accomplishment to the Cub Scouts https://www.scouts.ca/ . Being a bit of a drama nut, I also created many skits that we did at our monthly award ceremonies.
So one of those skits turned into the story of Quacker and much later became the foundation for this book that I called “Quacker Flies South”
For the skit I made up the story more or less as you see read in the eBook that you can download here.
I told the story to the Cub troop ….. a few of the Cubs acted out the roles of the parent ducks and the ducklings onstage while the rest watched ….. lots of fun!!!
Many years later as a gift to my son I wrote the story, had a friend edit the copy …… had the illustrations done by an illustrator from San Francisco ….. then had about a dozen copies printed in Calgary, Alberta. Those were all distributed to friends and family.
My son Ryan has the original artwork!!!
I am happy if anyone chooses to use the story however they like. I just ask that you send a comment that you wish to do so – Cheers Joseph
